Phata Byung Hydropower Project Seeks Environmental Clearance Renewal

The 76 MW Phata Byung Hydropower Project on the Mandakini River near Sitapur village, Tehsil Okhimath, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, is seeking a de-novo environmental clearance due to the expiry of its previous approval. The project, featuring a 26m high dam, a 9.38 km head race tunnel, and an underground powerhouse with two 38 MW turbines, remains 74% complete. Delays, including those caused by the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, have necessitated this renewal to facilitate the remaining 26% of construction.
