The final phase of construction on the new Pamban railway bridge has commenced. The central portion of the old Pamban railway bridge will remain closed until June 2024. Construction of the new bridge began in 2019 by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) due to the deteriorating condition of the old bridge. Originally slated for completion by March 2023, delays were encountered due to various factors. Currently, fabrication of the lift span girder for the navigation span is underway, and the assembly of lifting towers is nearing completion. Officials anticipate physical works to conclude by July, with the central lift portion under active construction and the closure of the old bridge’s center section until June.
