In a pioneering move to address water pollution and land constraints, Kerala is set to introduce underground sewage treatment plants (STPs). This initiative, led by the local self-government department (LSGD), marks a significant shift in the state’s wastewater management approach. Aimed at mitigating water pollution and overcoming public resistance to traditional treatment facilities, the underground STPs will be piloted in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur districts. Locations for installation are currently being identified, with plans also in place for an underground STP at the Legislative Assembly complex.
