Jammu and Kashmir Unleashes Massive Power Potential: Plans for 20,000 MW Hydel and 750 MW Solar Energy Projects

Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) have a significant hydel power potential of 20,000 Megawatts (MW), but only 3504.90 MW has been harnessed so far, leaving 16500 MW untapped. The ‘JK Vision Document 2047’ suggests the need for developing small and mega hydro projects in the next 25 years, requiring an investment of around Rs 20,000,0 Cr. The document highlights opportunities for employment with upcoming power infrastructure projects and emphasizes the privatization of distribution functions for efficiency.

In the solar sector, J&K has identified land for projects generating 750 MW, with an investment of around Rs 4,000 Cr. The region has a solar energy potential of 111050 MW, making it a hub for investment opportunities in renewable resources. Currently, J&K has an installed solar power capacity of 27.25 MW.
