The district administration has submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidco) for the runway expansion at Madurai airport. The plan involves handing over acquired land to Airports Authority of India (AAI) for infrastructure development and increased airport capacity, especially for night operations. The runway, currently 7,500 feet, is planned to be extended to 12,500 feet. Despite delays since 2009, the government has acquired 640 acres for the project, though progress has been delayed by issues, including land acquisition resistance and changes to the underpass and route plans.
