Puducherry government launches Rs 1,433-crore PY-SHORE project for coastal resilience

The Puducherry government is set to implement the Rs 1,433-crore World Bank-aided Strengthening Coastal Resilience and Economy in Puducherry (PY-SHORE) project aimed at shoreline protection and improving coastal livelihoods. The project includes drafting a Shoreline Management Plan, sand nourishment, and hybrid coastal protection solutions. Key components involve Southern Reef construction (Rs 75 crore), sand dune restoration and mangrove rejuvenation (Rs 40 crore), and recharging shallow aquifers (Rs 50 crore). Additionally, a Rs 580-crore water interception, diversion, and treatment project will be undertaken. For the fishing community, initiatives include developing climate-resilient fishing villages (Rs 4 crore), modernising fishing infrastructure (Rs 120 crore), and upgrading Karaikal fishing harbour (Rs 35 crore).
