Underwater Road-Rail Tunnel Approved in Assam

An inter-ministerial committee has granted in-principle approval for construction of a twin-tube underwater road and rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The 15.8-km tunnel will form part of a 33.7-km corridor linking Gohpur and Numaligarh, with approach roads and a railway line. One tube will carry a single electrified rail track, while the other will accommodate two-lane road traffic.
