Battery storage testing planned at coal-fired power plants

Energy Storage Sector News India

India will begin testing battery storage systems at coal-fired plants to stabilize the grid amid growing solar generation. The Central Electricity Authority is drafting guidelines on minimum load requirements for thermal units as renewable capacity expands. NTPC has invited bids for 1.7 GW of battery storage across 11 coal plants. The initiative supports India’s plan of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 while adding 97 GW coal-based capacity by 2035 for assured round-the-clock supply.
