On August 5, 2024, the Ministry of Coal and the Ministry of Power & Natural Gas facilitated a landmark joint venture agreement between Coal India Limited (CIL) and GAIL (India) Limited (GAIL). This agreement is a significant move towards establishing a Coal to Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) plant in the Raniganj area of Eastern Coalfields Limited, West Bengal. The plant, using surface coal gasification (SCG) technology, aims to produce 80,000 Nm³ per hour of SNG, with an annual output of 633.6 million Nm³. It will require 1.9 million tonnes of coal, supplied by CIL. The project supports the National Coal Gasification Mission, aiming to utilize coal’s chemical properties, reduce natural gas import dependency, and advance the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
