Connecting West Bengal to Sikkim: The Sivok-Rangpo New Rail Line Project

In a bid to enhance connectivity and foster development, the Sivok-Rangpo New Rail Line Project emerges as a vital link between the Indian states of West Bengal and Sikkim. Stretching from the bustling town of Sivok to the picturesque Rangpo, this ambitious railway venture promises to open up new avenues of growth for the region.

The project, which originates from the New Jalpaiguri-Alipurduar-Samuktala Road line at Sivok railway station, traverses through the charming villages and towns of Kalimpong district in West Bengal and Pakyong District in Sikkim. Its path gracefully winds through the verdant landscapes of the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, crossing the majestic waters of River Teesta and River Rangpo along the way.

Initiated in 2009, the Sivok-Rangpo railway line project was symbolically inaugurated by the Minister of Railways in Sivok, West Bengal, and the Vice President of India in Rangpo, Sikkim, marking a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructural development.

Originally slated for completion by May 2015, the project encountered several hurdles, including delays in acquiring forest land in West Bengal and obtaining permissions for surveying in the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. The global pandemic further impeded progress. Consequently, the project’s completion date was revised to December 2024, with a revised budget of Rs 12,474.07 crore, including escalation costs.
