Feasibility Study for Maharashtra’s 40 Ropeway Proposals to Be Conducted in 2 Months

Representatives from the National Highways Logistic Management Limited (NHLML) are set to undertake a comprehensive feasibility study for 40 ropeway proposals across Maharashtra, including cities like Pune, Mumbai, Raigad, Nashik, Aurangabad, Satara, and Ratnagiri. These proposals, part of the National Ropeway Programme, aim to enhance connectivity and tourism by linking prominent landmarks such as Harishchandra fort in Ahmednagar, Sunset Point Jawhar in Palghar, and Goa fort at Dapoli in Ratnagiri.
While the Raigad ropeway is presently operational in the state, these new proposals have been under discussion for the past two years. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will evaluate the proposals through NHLML, which is tasked with implementing ropeway projects nationwide. The funding for these projects will be provided entirely by the Centre as part of the Parvatmala Yojana.
Under the scheme, NHLML will assess the feasibility of ropeway projects submitted by state governments, with a total of 250 proposals currently under evaluation nationwide. The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) and NHLML, a special purpose vehicle of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for infrastructure development, formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last week.
The state’s role will primarily involve providing land on lease for the landing sites of the cable cars, while NHLML will oversee the implementation of feasible ropeway projects identified through the evaluation process.
