NPCIL is set to seek approval for 10 additional 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) to be developed in fleet mode, aiming to expand India’s nuclear power capacity. This strategy supports the national goal of reaching up to 54 GW of nuclear energy by 2047. The reactors will be constructed at greenfield and brownfield sites, complementing existing projects in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. India’s current nuclear capacity is 8.8 GW from 25 plants, with plans to reach 22 GW by 2032 and further growth through Bharat Small Reactors by 2035. The government is also considering allowing private sector participation in nuclear power by amending the Atomic Energy Act.
