In a strategic move to ensure the economic viability of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link project (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link or MTHL), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced plans to develop 124 villages. A notification from the Maharashtra states Urban Development Department (UDD) outlines the withdrawal of the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) as the special planning authority for the area. Instead, it establishes the New Town Development Authority, with MMRDA as the development authority. This decision, heralding the development of a “third Mumbai,” aims to optimize the utilization of resources. While Mumbai covers an area of 603 square km, Navi Mumbai spans 344 square km. The government’s focus on economic viability underscores its commitment to the Rs 18,000-crore Atal Setu MTHL project, signaling a transformative phase in regional infrastructure development.
